Nokia N8 Goes Official, Will Land This Summer
Today, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced officially the upcoming availability of the high-end Nokia N8, the first handset from the company to run under the Symbian ^3 platform, and also the first to boast a 12-megapixel camera. According to the company, the new device is meant to offer users enhanced connectivity to other people, or to places and services, while enabling them to create compelling content and to stay in touch with friends via social networking sites.
On-demand Web TV programs and Ovi Store applications are available for the Nokia N8 too, as soon as it will land on the market in the third quarter of the ongoing year, priced at EUR 370, before applicable taxes or subsidies. Moreover, the new mobile phone includes free global Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation, which will offer users access to guidance to places in more than 70 countries all around the world.
“The Nokia N8 introduces a 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash and a large sensor that rivals those found in compact digital cameras. AMD 'Thuban' Phenom II X6 Launched
A long time ago, processor manufacturers, such as Intel and AMD decided that the race for the highest processor frequency could only go so far, which is how multi-core processors came to be. Today, Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices formally announced the debut of its latest line of Phenom II CPUs, introducing the company's first consumer 6-core CPUs, formerly codenamed 'Thuban'. The new Phenom II X6 processors have consequently become the company's highest-performance CPUs to date, providing enthusiasts with a boost of performance in multithreaded applications.

The UnZipper application was developed to be a file extraction tool for decompressing files of a selected type/file extension out of a Zip or a compressed folder.
This tool was developed as a solution to a repetitive task that I often face. While working in the GIS field, I often download lots of spatial data from the Internet, and when downloading aerials, they are normally in Zip files or compressed folders.
The problem I was running into was that I might download 1, 3, 50, or hundreds of these Zip files to get the aerials for a certain location of a project. As you might have guessed, the extraction process for all of the aerials could take some time. In addition, most of the time, I was only interested in one file out of the zip.

SIG Presents Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0
There is no question that wireless connectivity is slowly but steadily moving towards an age free of cables, seeing how even batteries that recharge over WiFi have been invented. In fact, with each connectivity standard being closely worked on by special groups of corporations, it is always only a matter of time until the newest and most advanced version of the standard comes out. This is exactly what the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has been doing until recently, when they were finally able to officially launch the Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0.
Unlike other standards, Bluetooth v4.0 is more like a set of three distinct standards: Bluetooth high speed technology, Bluetooth low energy technology and Classic Bluetooth technology. Either of these three can be used separately in different devices, depending on what said electronic emphasizes most. For example, watches will use both low energy (while collecting data from sensors) as well as Classic technology (when sending info to a PC). A pedometer, and other sensors, on the other hand, will use only the low power version. The full set of three will be present in PCs and mobile phones, which support the widest range of uses.
The low energy mode will enable the Bluetooth standard to become more widespread in health, sports, fitness, security and home entertainment and will be fully integrated within the Bluetooth specification by the end of June. As for the actual range, most basic devices (using any or all of the three components) will reach about 10 meters. Of course, as with all previous iterations of the standard, the range will be optimized to wider areas, in this case for up to 200 feet and beyond, if manufacturers so wish. End-users should expect the first Bluetooth v4.0-enabled electronics to start selling by the end of the year or in early 2011.
“Bluetooth v4.0 throws open the doors to a host of new markets for Bluetooth manufacturers and products such as watches, remote controls, and a variety of medical and in-home sensors. Many of these products run on button-cell batteries that must last for years versus hours and will also benefit from the longer range enabled by this new version of the Bluetooth specification,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth SIG.

Though netbooks have been doing well even with just the Intel Atom N450 CPU at their core, demand for higher capabilities, especially better handling of multimedia files, has led to Intel's decision to raise the performance bar a little higher. One step was the unveiling of the Atom N475, which has a higher clock speed (1.83Ghz) and, most importantly, support for DDR3 memory. With technology evolving even further, however,
consumers find that they want more and more power, which, as always, means that chip makers have to come up with something newer and faster.
Fudzilla seems to have stumbled over something that should have been kept secret for at least a few more months. Apparently, while the Atom N475 is a step towards fulfilling consumer demand for better netbooks, it is not exactly the farthest that the netbook-aimed Atom line will go. In fact, the company actually plans an SKU developed on the 45nm manufacturing process and with a power consumption of 8.5W for the chip itself and the graphics. The name of this unit is not known, but it will supposedly outmatch any entry-level mobile chip by far.
Fudzilla reports that even the Atom N475 will seem a dwarf compared to the upcoming product, which will have not one but two cores, each running at 1.50Ghz. No other information is available, but from just this much one can realize that netbooks based on the new part will be significantly more powerful at a thermal design power only 20% higher than models constructed with the N475.
If these assumptions prove accurate, entry-level end-users will finally see the kind of performance they want, or at least capabilities close enough to what they would wish to see. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing when the Santa Clara company will unleash this creature on the market.

Foxconn Does Test Production Run for Acer
Acer may soon get a new notebook supplier if the first volume test production run returns positive results. According to a report by Digitimes, Acer and Foxconn have been discussing the possibility of a cooperation on notebooks and it adds that, by the time the year is over, it will have been decided whether such a pact will come to pass. Such a development would widen Foxconn's already noteworthy customer base, which includes top players like Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Dell and ASUS.
With the world economy on the rebound, sales are starting to increase on all levels of the market. This, naturally, includes the notebook segment, and Acer expects its total shipments to rise by 40 million over the course of this year (compared to 30 million in 2009). As such, it makes sense for the PC maker to consider a new manufacturing partner, especially one that makes systems for its greatest rivals. That said, Foxconn itself has supposedly decided on completing its Chongching, China production base by May, instead of September, as it was initially scheduled.
“Acer and Foxconn have been in talks about possible notebook cooperation, said company chairman JT Wang. If price, quality and shipment schedules are suitable, Acer could source from Foxconn, but there are no detailed order plans as yet,” Digitimes reports.
According to the same report, Acer outsources based on the so-called “3+1” model, which essentially means that Acer notebooks are made by Quanta Computer, Wistron and Compal Electronics, as well as a lower tier maker. Currently, that fourth position is held by Inventec, though the orders it received, thus far, have been limited. Quanta and Wistron meet about 95% of Acer's total orders, which makes their position as manufacturing partners quite solid. If Foxconn does become the newest partner (which is possible, considering that it collaborated with Acer on desktops and smartphones in the past), Inventec may be quite strongly affected.

A SOFTWARE ENGINEER AND A RIVER GODDESS
Once upon a time, there was a software engineer who used to develop programs on his Pentium machine, sitting under a tree on the banks of a river. He used to earn his bread by selling those programs in the Sunday market.
One day, while he was working, his machine tumbled off the table and fell in the river. Encouraged by the Panchatantra story of his childhood (the woodcutter and the axe),
He started praying to the River Goddess. The River Goddess wanted to test him and so appeared only after one month of rigorous prayers. The engineer told her that he had lost his computer in the river.
As usual, the Goddess wanted to test his honesty. She showed him a match box and asked, "Is this your computer ?" Disappointed by the Goddess' lack of computer awareness, the engineer replied, "No."
She next showed him a pocket-sized calculator and asked if that was his.
Annoyed, the engineer said "No, not at all!!"
Finally, she came up with his own Pentium machine and asked if it was his.
The engineer, left with no option, sighed and said "Yes."
The River Goddess was happy with his honesty. She was about to give
Him all three items, but before she could make the offer, the engineer
Asked her, "Don't you know that you're supposed to show me some better computers before bringing up my own ?"
The River Goddess, angered at this, replied, "I know that, you stupid donkey! The first two things I showed you were the Trillennium and the Billennium, the latest computers from IBM !". So saying, she disappeared with the Pentium!!

Moral :If you're not up-to-date with technology trends, it's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
