Nokia Ovi Suite

Ovi by Nokia is the brand for Nokia's Internet services. The Ovi services can be used from a mobile device, computer (through Nokia Ovi Suite) or via the web (Ovi.com). Nokia focuses on five key services areas: Games, Maps, Media, Messaging and Music. Nokia's aim with Ovi is to include 3rd parties, such as operators and third-party services like Yahoo's Flickr photo site. With the announcement of Ovi Maps Player API, Nokia has started to evolve their services into a platform, enabling third-parties to make use of Nokia's Ovi services. It has some significance in that Nokia is moving deeper into the world of Internet services, where head-on competition with Microsoft, Google and Apple is inevitable. Ovi is the Finnish word for "door". As of 28 February 2010 there were almost 1.5 million downloads every day.(from WIKIPEDIA)

How to: speed up your wireless internet connection on Windows XP

1. Move the wireless router to a better location

The first thing you want to do is to make sure your wireless router is in the best location possible. If you have a laptop that you move around all the time or if you have several computers, the router should be in the centre of your home and office. Don’t hide it into cupboards, or under chairs and tables.

But if you only have one stationary computer, use a cable connection to the router or move the router as close to the computer as possible.

You can check the signal strength from the Wireless connection menu, accessible from Start -> Connect To -> Wireless Connection. You can also access it by clicking the wireless icon at the bottom right corner of the screen if you are connected.
2. Upgrade the wireless router firmware

Sometimes the problem is with the router firmware. Make sure you update your router firmware as often as possible to avoid incompatibility with newer systems. You can update your router firmware from the wireless router control panel. Type your router’s IP address into the browser to access the CP.

The default IP of routers is normally 192.168.1.1 for Linksys, 192.168.0.1 for D-Link and Netgear, some US Robotics routers use 192.168.123.254 and some SMC routers have 192.168.2.1. The router’s default IP address is always in the documentation of the router.
3. Change the wireless broadcast channel

If there are several wireless networks in your area, they can begin to distract each other. Most routers use the wireless channel 6 by default and the channel can slow down if full of signals coming from many routers. You can change the wireless channel from the Wireless Control Panel.

If changing the channel didn’t speed up your wireless connection, change it back to 6. It’s better not to play with them too much because this can distract your firewall.
4. Update your computer’s wireless network drivers

You can search for driver updates from the Windows Update site or your manufacturers website.

If none of the above tips helped, contact your wireless router manufacturer or just go back to a wired internet connection.

How To: Display The Shutdown Menu When Your Computer’s Power Button Is Pressed

By default, your Windows XP will shut down when the Power button is pressed. It’s a good idea to change it so that the shutdown menu is opened instead, especially if you have little kids running around the house.
It’s quite easy to change it:
Step 1:
Go to your Windows XP’s desktop and right-click it. Select “Properties” and the Display Properties window will appear.
Open the “Screen Saver” tab and look for the “Power” button near the bottom of the window. Click it.

Step 2:
In the “Power Options Properties” window that opens, go to …

How To Bypass The Recycle Bin When Deleting Files

SHUTDOWN WORKS, BUT IT’S REAL SLOW.

If it appears that Win XP is not shutting down, give it some time. Some users have reported a minute or longer for shutdown to visibly start. Thus far, it appears that this is a consequence of software that is running when shutdown is attempted, and it also may have something to do with particular hardware. If you are experiencing this problem, be sure to close all running programs before attempting shutdown and see if this solves your problem. If so, then you can determine, by trial and error, which program(s) are involved.
One specific solution for this was provided by Microsoft support.

” In Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services. (You can also get this by launching SERVICES.MSC from a Run box. This utility is also built into the Computer Management console.) Stop the Nvidia Driver Helper service. Many other friends quickly confirmed that this solved this “extremely slow shutdown” problem for them.

How To Enable Hibernation

Under Windows 98, Me, or 2000 there was an option in the shutdown dialog box to enter the computer into hibernation (where all the content of the RAM is copied to the hard disk). The shutdown dialog box of Windows XP doesn't offer any longer the hibernation button. Some users may get confused about how to enable the hibernation mode. If this mode is supported by your motherboard (ACPI) you have to do the following:

1. Click Start and Shut Down,
2. Point the standby button and maintain the shift key pushed,
3. A new hibernation button appears: click it while still holding the shift key: voila your PC will hibernate.

Getting an Older Program to Run on Windows XP

1.Right–click the executable or the program shortcut to the executable, and then click Properties.

2.Select the Run this program in compatibility mode check box.

3.From the list, select an operating system that the program runs in comfortably.

If necessary, also change the display settings and/or resolution, or disable the Windows XP visual themes.
Run the program again when you’re finished changing the settings. Adjust the compatibility settings again if the program is still not running smoothly: a program that’s unhappy on Windows 2000 may flourish on Windows 98.

Reduce Temporary Internet F ile Space

The temporary internet files clutter your hard drive with copies of each page visited. These can build up over time and take up disk space. Even more bothersome is that instead of getting new pages each time IE often takes the page out the temp internet files. This can be a problem if you are viewing a website that is updated all the time. If you are on a slow connection such as a 56K or lower then this can be good but if you are on a fast broadband connection, like me, then you can get away with decreasing the size of your temp internet files to just one meg without any performance decrease.

Launch Internet Explorer.
Select the Tools from the menu bar.
Then select Internet Options... from the drop down menu.
Once the internet options has loaded click on the general tab.
Under the temporary internet files section click the settings button.
A settings window will load. Slide the slider all the way to the left so the size indicated in the text box on the right is one.
Click OK
Click Ok

Convert a FAT Partition to the NTFS File System

To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, perform the following steps.

Click Start, click Programs, and then click Command Prompt.

In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run.

At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS.
Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.

NOTE: Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command. It is also recommended to verify the integrity of the backup before proceeding, as well as to run RDISK and update the emergency repair disk (ERD).

Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.

Boot Defragment

A very important new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This basically means that all boot files are placed next to each other on the disk drive to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled but some upgrade users have reported that it isn't on their setup.

1. Start Regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
3. Select Enable from the list on the right.
4. Right on it and select Modify.
5. Change the value to Y to enable and N to disable.
6. Reboot your computer.

Hide 'User Accounts' from users

Go to Start/Run, and type:

GPEDIT.MSC

Open the path

User Config > Admin Templates > Control Panel

doubleclick "Hide specified Control Panel applets"

put a dot in 'enabled', then click 'Show"

click Add button,

type "nusrmgt.cpl" into the add box.

Speed up your browsing of Windows 2000 & XP machines

Here's a great tip to speed up your browsing of Windows XP machines. Its actually a fix to a bug installed as default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note that though the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the Internet & Windows Explorers improve significantly after applying it since it doesn't search for Scheduled Tasks anymore. Here's how :

Open up the Registry and go to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

Under that branch, select the key :
{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}
and delete it.

This is key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may want to export the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary.

This fix is so effective that it doesn't require a reboot and you can almost immediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing processes.

Disable CD Autorun

1) Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC

2) Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System.

3) Locate the entry for Turn autoplay off and modify it as you desire.

Make Use Of Your Windows Key

Windows: Display the Start menu
Windows + D: Minimize or restore all windows
Windows + E: Display Windows Explorer
Windows + F: Display Search for files
Windows + Ctrl + F: Display Search for computer
Windows + F1: Display Help and Support Center
Windows + R: Display Run dialog box
Windows + break: Display System Properties dialog box
Windows + shift + M: Undo minimize all windows
Windows + L: Lock the workstation
Windows + U: Open Utility Manager
Windows + Q: Quick switching of users (Powertoys only)
Windows + Q: Hold Windows Key, then tap Q to scroll thru the different users on your PC

To change disk drive letters

To change drive letters (useful if you have two drives and have partitioned the boot drive, but the secondary drive shows up as "D")

Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management, Disk Management, then right-click the partition whose name you want to change (click in the white area just below the word "Volume") and select "change drive letter and paths."
From here you can add, remove or change drive letters and paths to the partition.

Command Prompt on Right-Click

Many computer users, specially the programmers, need to launch a command prompt window every once in a while to execute some dos/shell commands. The problem is, when a command prompt window launched, the default path is normally the system path or the user profile's path. The users will then have to do all the "cd" commands to change the directories to the path he/she wants. This trick shows you how to add an option called "Command Prompt" when you right-click on a folder in Windows. With this option, a Command Prompt Window will launch and its current directory will be the path to the folder you've selected.Use this trick at your own risk. Here's what you'll get: The SolutionYou can either edit your registry OR download the registry file and apply it on your computer.Method I. Manually edit the registry: 1. Start > Run 2. Enter "regedit" and hit Enter 3. Expand to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell" 4. Right-click on "shell" and select New > Key 5. Make sure a new key is created under "shell". Change the name of this key to "Command Prompt" 6. Right-click on this new key "Command Prompt" and select New > Key 7. Change the name of this key to "command" 8. Here's what we should have: 9. Double-click on the "(Default)" text on the right window to bring up the edit box 10. Enter this text into the Value Data field: cmd.exe "%1" 11. Click OK and close the registry.

.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 / 2.0 / 1.1

Microsoft .NET Framework is the programming model of the .NET environment for building, deploying, and running Web-based applications, smart client applications, and XML Web services.

It manages much of the plumbing, enabling developers to focus on writing the business logic code for their applications.

The .NET Framework includes the common language runtime and class libraries.

The Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 redistributable package installs the .NET Framework runtime and associated files required to run applications developed to target the .NET Framework 2.0.

The .NET Framework version 2.0 improves scalability and performance of applications with improved caching, application deployment and updating with ClickOnce, support for the broadest array of browsers and devices with ASP.NET 2.0 controls and services.

Important: You cannot install two different language versions of the .NET Framework on the same machine. Attempting to install a second language version of the .NET Framework will cause the following error to appear: "Setup cannot install Microsoft .NET Framework because another version of the product is already installed." If you are targeting a non-English platform or if you wish to view .NET Framework resources in a different language, you must download the appropriate language version of the .NET Framework language pack

Requirements:

· Windows Installer 3.0 (except for Windows 98/ME, which require Windows Installer 2.0 or later). Windows Installer 3.1 or later is recommended.
· IE 5.01 or later: You must also be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later for all installations of the .NET Framework.
· Disk Space Requirements: 280 MB (x86), 610 MB (x64)

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 Language Packs contain translated text, such as error messages, for languages other than English. Without the installation of a Language Pack, these messages are displayed in English by default.

Multiple language packs, each for a different language, can be installed on a single computer. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 Language Packs contain translated text, such as error messages, for each language.

The following Language Packs are designed for NET Framework 2.0 SP1 x86 ONLY : French , Greek , Spanish , Italian , German , Japanese.

Onward to SP1, Windows 7 RC Dies Next Week Come June 1st, 2010

As Microsoft’s latest Windows client is evolving toward the first major upgrade, the last pre-release Build of the operating system will expire next week. Come June 1st, 2010, Windows 7 Release Candidate Build 7100 will be completely killed off. Early adopters that followed the development process of Windows Vista’s successor already know that May marked one year since Windows 7 RC was released to the public for testing. Build 7100 ended up taking the number of downloads of pre-release Windows 7 copies to over eight million.

Just a few months ahead of the May 2009 RC milestone, Microsoft had released the Beta of Windows 7. Build 7000 became available for download to testers in January 2009, and although it was initially planned as a limited testing program, Microsoft ended up delivering the bits to all interested in testing Vista’s successor.

There are a total of three stages to the expiration of Windows 7 RC, two of which have already passed. According to Microsoft, “Effective February 15, 2010, the expiration notification process begins: Windows 7 RC users receive an expiration notification in the task bar one time per day. Windows 7 RC users are presented with the Notification Wizard one time every four hours and then one time every hour. Effective March 1, 2010, Windows 7 RC enters the next phase of expiration: Expiration notifications in the task bar continue. Computers that are running Windows 7 RC restart every two hours. When the computer restarts, your work will not be saved.”

The third and final stage of Windows 7 RC’s expiration starts on June 1st. “Effective June 1, 2010, Windows 7 RC expires: Windows starts to a black desktop. Windows 7 RC users are presented with a Windows Activation screen. The screen states that the Windows that you are running is not genuine. Computers that are running Windows 7 RC restart every two hours.”

This is the most important change for Windows 7 RC as well as the fact that Build 7100 of the operating system will begin to be considered as pirated.

Service Pack 1

Windows 7 Build 7601.16556 v.172 is the latest leaked milestone of Service Pack 1. Of course, Microsoft is not confirming any details related to the development of SP1 for Windows 7, at this point in time, let alone, discussing actual Build numbers. The company did indicate that SP1 would be only a minor evolution to Windows 7, with features such as RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory representing the most consistent parts of the upgrade, both reserved for Windows Server 2008 R2. According to third-party sources Windows 7 SP1 Build 6.1.7601.16560.win7sp1_beta.100524-1800 wrapped up this week could be selected to be the official Beta. No word from Microsoft on this, though.

RTM still going strong

But the truth is that Windows 7 doesn’t need SP1 to be ready for adoption, be it by home users or business customers. The level of adoption that the platform has enjoyed so far is testimony to this fact. And remember, Windows 7 is, after all, the fastest selling operating system in history.

According to data from Internet metrics company Net Applications, Windows 7 accounted for a market share of 11.68% at the end of April 2010. Next week, Net Applications will provide statistics for May 2010, and Windows 7 is poised to jump at least 1%, to approximately 13% of the market, a figure that is roughly equivalent to over 130 million sold licenses worldwide. Meanwhile Vista will drop even further from 15.60%, while Windows XP will also continue to lose market share, down from 63.41%. By contrast, Windows Vista only hit the 13% market-share mark in October 2008, almost two years after the operating system’s general availability deadline.

This week, Forrester Research published a new report in which it indicated that Windows 7 uptake was particularly strong with business customers. According to Forrester, Windows 7 is already running on 7% of business PCs, at only half a year after launch.

“After years of stagnation due to lack of budget, IT managers are gearing up for a major desktop transformation project over the next 12 to 18 months that will introduce a new desktop operating system, productivity suite, browser, and applications on new PCs. Inevitably, Windows 7 is very much top of mind as firms start to refresh their legacy systems, but the browser wars are only starting to heat up. Forrester's analysis of more than 90,000 client PCs found that Windows 7 has quickly become the default desktop operating system for new machines and that Internet Explorer (IE) dominance is slowly eroding in favor of Firefox and Chrome,” Forrester analyst Benjamin Gray revealed.

75% of businesses continue to rely on XP, a nine-year-old operating system, while 13% are still running Windows Vista. Corporations are traditionally slow when it comes down to migrating to a new operating system, and generally attempt to tie hardware and software upgrades together. What is interesting is that Windows 7 Microsoft managed to break the mold of enterprise adoption of a new Windows OS. It still has a lot to do, but companies such as Intel were convinced to upgrade to Windows 7 well ahead of the delivery of SP1.

Introducing the Windows 3D PC

While 3D PCs are already possible, they need to be constructed by Do-It-Yourself (DIY) enthusiasts. However, Following Computex, various original equipment manufacturers and hardware manufacturers will provide customers with a new three-dimensional computing experience right out of the box. According to Brandon LeBlanc, windows communications manager on the Windows Client Communications Team, NVIDIA has partnered with Microsoft, Alienware, Asus, Dell, Toshiba, Acer, Dell, LG, ViewSonic and additional system builders in order to introduce the 3D PC, a new category of personal computers.

“So what makes a 3D PC? A 3D PC must have, by definition, the following minimum requirements: a pair of 3D active-shutter glasses. A 120Hz 3D-capable display which can be a desktop LCD monitor, a 3D projector, a 3D TV, or a laptop with an integrated 3D-capable LCD. A discrete GPU such as the latest GeForce GPU’s from NVIDIA that are designed to deliver HD content to a 3D display,” LeBlanc revealed.

Customers will be able to buy 3D PCs for prices starting approximately at $1,500 and enjoy 3D content such as games and movies as soon as they boot the machine. The 3D PC is obviously designed to keep up with the increasing trend in 3D entertainment, associated with unique experiences such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

“NVIDIA has invested a lot of time working closely with game developers so that more than 425 PC games work great with NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology. Sony and Fujifilm will be bringing 3D digital cameras to market where consumers can take 3D photos and view them in 3D on their 3D PC. A 3D PC can view the Web in 3D including live streaming of 3D video. And you can watch Blu-ray 3D movies thanks to folks like Cyberlink who will be releasing a version of their software player that will support playback of Blu-ray movies in 3D,” LeBlanc added.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, the Redmond company has labored to make Silverlight 3D-ready. The latest iteration of the technology, Silverlight 4, supports scenarios in which 3D content is streamed to NVIDIA 3D Vision-equipped PCs over the Internet.

Encrypted Google Web Search Now Available

Google has extended SSL coverage to its biggest service yet, the Web Search. The new encrypted search offers significant privacy protection at virtually no cost.

The HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is a protocol that makes use of SSL/TLS to encrypt HTTP communications. Even though HTTPS dates back to the '90s, until a few years back only a select number of websites, like online banking systems, enabled this security mechanism for entire browsing sessions.

It has always been a known fact that network administrators can snoop traffic passing through the infrastructure they control, yet people never really cared on a wide scale that their private communications could be intercepted and viewed without authorization. A more widespread need for HTTP encryption wasn't felt until the rapid proliferation of unsecured private wireless networks and hotspots, which made Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks from ill-intent parties a lot more likely.

Session-wide HTTPS has been available for Gmail for years, however, the majority of users remained unaware of the option or of how to enable it. Finally, after repeated pleads from security researchers, IT experts or privacy advocates and after performing extensive testing, Google enabled it by default for all users of its email service.

Enabling encryption for Web Search might not seem as important as protecting private emails, but the move carries important privacy benefits, especially for users in countries where freedom of information and speech carry little meaning. "When you search on https://www.google.com, an encrypted connection is created between your browser and Google. This secured channel helps protect your search terms and your search results pages from being intercepted by a third party on your network," the company explains in a post on its official blog.

But protected search terms and search results are not the only benefit of the new SSL encryption. The feature also strips the referrer URL from the browser's header when visiting a URL shown in the search results. Therefore, the website in question won't see that you reached it after performing a Google Web search.

According to The Register, Google plans to enable HTTPS for Web Search by default in the future as it did for Gmail, but only after more testing is performed to make sure the change won't negatively impact large groups of users. It is also worth noting that, at the moment, SSL encryption is not yet available for all services that normally integrate with Web Search, such as Image Search or Google Maps.

Windows 7 to Get 64-bit (x64) Firefox

64-bit (x64) architectures are the future, and already well on their way to becoming mainstream and burying 32-bit (x64). Microsoft was one of the first companies to recognize the trend and adapt products such as Windows XP, and then Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Office 2010 to the general trend in the evolution of processors. In fact, the software giant is already producing x64 exclusive software with Windows Server 2008 R2 and beyond, for example. Users currently running the 64-bit flavor of Windows 7 will soon be able to install a 64-bit version of Firefox offered officially by Mozilla.

In a platform meeting on May 25th, 2010, Mozilla indicated that it had been gearing up to produce the first x64 builds of Firefox tailored to Windows 7 by the end of this week. Mozilla’s Armen Zambrano Gasparian revealed that, “Once the builds start working (I almost have them) they will show up in” the Latest Trunk download section. Early adopters will, of course, be able to download x64 Firefox releases and run them on 64-bit Windows 7.

Of course, users of Windows 7 already have a 64-bit browser at their disposal. The latest iteration of the Windows client comes with Internet Explorer 8 (64-bit) out of the box. However, as customers undoubtedly are aware, the default browser for Windows 7 is the 32-bit version of IE8, despite the fact that the operating system features the x64 flavor.

The reason for this is rather simple. 64-bit browsers don’t really enjoy support across the board for the time being. One illustrative example in this regard is that Adobe isn’t providing a x64 version of Flash to integrate with x64 Internet Explorer 8. The same is valid for Firefox. Users of x64 Firefox won’t have a release of the Adobe Flash plugin to integrate with their browser, severely impacting the user experience on websites such as YouTube, for example.

Obviously, a 64-bit (x64) version of Mozilla’s open source browser will only be delivered in the future. Firefox 4.0 is currently cooking, with the promise of a Beta development milestone available as early as the coming month. Still, ahead of the Firefox 4.0 Beta planned for June 2010, Mozilla is looking to offer early adopters at least one more Developer Preview to test-drive.

Cloud image 1.2.5

Resizing images or converting them to different formats so that they fit our needs at the same time preserving as much as possible from the original quality are daily activities for some users. The various image formats at our disposal today do not share the same amount of information and have their usefulness very well defined (like PNG is a perfect decision for graph on the Web or in documents while TIFF makes a wise choice for printing).

No matter what use you want picture for, chances are you’re going to need to resize it or convert it to a different type. For conversion and resize activities that include JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF or PNG file formats, there is a very simple solution, under the name of CloudImage. The application is free of charge and can be used without limitations even in corporate environments.

It comes with a minimalistic yet nice looking interface, which displays intuitive buttons that make the available help file obsolete. After adding the images (either one by one or one folder at a time), you’ll have to define the terms of the job so that the final result is the expected one. For this, you have to check out the “Options” window that features the general settings and picture resize functions.

As the entire application has been built with the average and beginner user in mind, it lacks complex settings or tormenting terminology, everything being as clear as possible. In this case, all this translates into reduced functionality design, besides converting to and from JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF and PNG, mainly for renaming and resizing images.

The several presets at your disposal when trying to rename images include creating a random name for each element or set the date as the common name. Leaving it unchanged is a possibility, just like customizing it by adding your own string of characters. Also, you can enable all four choices to be used at once; thus, the resulting file’s name will have the original string of text, a random one, current date and whatever characters you wish to be added to the mix.

What some of the users may not enjoy is that renaming the items with the same name results in the action being carried out in the exact same way as Windows OS. i.e. ascending numbers will be added between brackets at the end of the filename. This is actually the best compromise the application could do considering there are no advanced renaming options.

Other choices at your disposal under this first tab of the “Options” window are enabling to show a report of the job when finished and turning off the computer once the task is complete. Particular to converting to JPEG is the JPEG quality slide bar. This will determine the quality of the final result on a scale from zero to 100%. You benefit from a preview of the quality set.

The “Editing” tab shelters a different sort of customization, which deals with the dimensions of the processed images. Again, to make it as simple as possible for the user, there are presets to work with: 1,024x768, 800x600, 640x480, 480x320, 320x240 or 176x180. Of course, you can set the size to any values you want by typing in the width and height numbers yourself.

As simple it is in options and ease of use, CloudImage lacks one vital function when it comes to resizing your images, and that is preserving aspect ratio. Without this, you will inevitably come up with distorted results sooner or later. Still on the downside, the application will drain your RAM when faced with processing a larger pile of images. During our tests, RAM usage increased above 1.2GB, while CPU peaked around 50%.

To make customization complete, the developer lets you add your own text as watermark. You get to set the font and color, as well as the opacity and its position in the image. For company use, CloudImage provides trademark symbols. Placing the watermark anywhere on the image is a simple job, as all you have to do is move your mouse to the desired location and click.

CloudImage is elementary in functions and options, its handling requiring minimal effort from the user, even a beginner. It has been built for the simplest image resize and conversion tasks and that is exactly what it does. Faced with a heftier batch of items to process, it will require plenty of RAM in order to complete the job, but it will not fail on you.

Among the strong points of the application, we count the fact that it is portable (so it can be carried around on portable storage devices and used on any PC you plug it in); having no restriction on its use in corporate environments is also one of the benefits of CloudImage.

The interface is intuitive enough for any user to be able to work with the program without the need to appeal to the help file. Picture watermarking is done with the least effort.

Lack of aspect ratio function may lead plenty of users toward different picture resize/convert instruments on the market.

RAM usage spikes exponentially if large amounts of pictures have to be processed. In our case, the job was completed, but users with less fortunate configurations may encounter huge difficulties in accessing their computer.

Used only for tasks that do not demand anything else but turning one file format into another (JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF and PNG) or simple rename jobs, CloudImage is a perfect choice. It comes with preview function, watermarking abilities, presets for resizing or renaming your files, all in a user-friendly, intuitive interface. But users demanding more elaborate functions will find it disappointing and will discard it as such.

Outlook Express 6.0

Microsoft Outlook Express puts the world of online communication on your desktop. Whether you want to exchange e-mail with colleagues and friends or join newsgroups to trade ideas and information, the tools you need are here.

If you`re looking for an e-mail program that is fully integrated with your OS, look no further. This free e-mail application will rival even the most powerful commercial programs.

It`s great also for people who want to check their Hotmail accounts with a mail client.

Here are some key features of "Outlook Express":

· Manage multiple e-mail and newsgroup accounts
If you have several e-mail or newsgroup accounts, you can work with all of them within one window. You can also create multiple users, or identities, for the same computer. Each identity has unique e-mail folders and an individual Address Book. Multiple identities make it easy for you to keep work e-mail separate from personal e-mail, and also to keep individual users' e-mail separated.

· Browse through messages quickly and easily
Using the message list and preview pane, you can view a list of messages and read individual messages at the same time. The Folders list contains e-mail folders, news servers, and newsgroups, and you can easily switch among them. You can also create new folders to organize and sort messages, and then set up message rules so that incoming e-mail that meets your criteria automatically goes to a specific folder. You can also create your own views to customize the way you look at your e-mail.

· Keep your e-mail on a server so you can view it from more than one computer
If your Internet service provider (ISP) uses an Internet message access protocol (IMAP) e-mail server for incoming e-mail, you can read, store, and organize your messages in folders on the server without downloading the messages to your computer. That way, you can view messages from any computer that can connect to that server.

· Use the Address Book to store and retrieve e-mail addresses
You can save names and addresses in the Address Book automatically by simply replying to a message. You can also import names and addresses from other programs, type them into the Address Book, add them from e-mail messages you receive, or add them from a search of popular Internet directory services (white pages). The Address Book supports Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for viewing Internet directory services.

· Add a personal signature or stationery to your messages
You can insert essential information into outgoing messages as part of your personal signature, and you can create multiple signatures to use for different purposes. You can also include a business card with more detailed information. To make your messages look more attractive, you can add stationery patterns and backgrounds, and you can change the color and style of the text.

· Send and receive secure messages
You can digitally sign and encrypt messages by using digital IDs. Digitally signing your message assures recipients that the message is really from you. Encryption ensures that only intended recipients can read the message.

· Find newsgroups that interest you
Looking for a newsgroup that matches your interests? You can search for newsgroups that contain keywords or browse through all of the newsgroups available from your Usenet provider. When you find a newsgroup you want to view regularly, add it to your Subscribed list so you can find it again easily.

· View newsgroup conversations efficiently
You can view a newsgroup message and all of the responses without reading an entire message list. When you view the list of messages, you can expand and collapse conversations to make it easier to find what interests you. You can also use views to display only the messages you want to read.

· Download newsgroup messages for offline reading
To use your online time efficiently, you can download messages or entire newsgroups, so you don't have to be connected to your ISP to read messages. You can also download message headers only for offline viewing and then mark the headers of the messages you want to read; then the next time you are connected, Outlook Express downloads the message text. You can also compose messages offline and send them the next time you reconnect.

A SOFTWARE ENGINEER AND A RIVER GODESS.

Once upon a time, there was a software engineer who used to develop programs on his Pentium machine, sitting under a tree on the banks of a river. He used to earn his bread by selling those programs in the Sunday market.

One day, while he was working, his machine tumbled off the table and fell in the river. Encouraged by the Panchatantra story of his childhood (the woodcutter and the axe),

He started praying to the River Goddess. The River Goddess wanted to test him and so appeared only after one month of rigorous prayers. The engineer told her that he had lost his computer in the river.

As usual, the Goddess wanted to test his honesty. She showed him a match box and asked, "Is this your computer ?" Disappointed by the Goddess' lack of computer awareness, the engineer replied, "No."

She next showed him a pocket-sized calculator and asked if that was his.

Annoyed, the engineer said "No, not at all!!"

Finally, she came up with his own Pentium machine and asked if it was his.
The engineer, left with no option, sighed and said "Yes."

The River Goddess was happy with his honesty. She was about to give

Him all three items, but before she could make the offer, the engineer

Asked her, "Don't you know that you're supposed to show me some better computers before bringing up my own ?"

The River Goddess, angered at this, replied, "I know that, you stupid donkey! The first two things I showed you were the Trillennium and the Billennium, the latest computers from IBM !". So saying, she disappeared with the Pentium!!

Google I/O 2010: Google TV Set to Conquer the Living Room

Android was the star of the show on the second day of the Google I/O 2010 conference. The first half of the starting keynote was dedicated to the Android mobile platform and the launch of Android 2.2 Froyo. The second half was also about Android, though, a position it hasn’t been in before. Google has, as expected, officially announced Google TV, a new platform marrying software, hardware and the web and bringing them to the living room.

The emphasis is on ‘platform,’ Google TV is not just one device, or a piece of software, or even a service. It’s all of them combined to do what many have tried, but no one succeeded so far, combine a complete web experience with the TV experience in a way that compromises neither.

With Google TV, the line between traditional programming, online video and even other online content becomes blurred. Normally, finding something to watch on TV meant flipping through the channels or looking through the TV guide. But with the number of channels always increasing, it’s hard to find what you want when you want it. Google TV solves this with a simple idea, the same one Google has been applying for more than a decade, search.

Users will be able to bring up a search box that enables them to search specifically for the content they want. But, of course, the content they want may not be on at that particular time. It may be available online, though, so, luckily, Google TV looks to online sources as well to find what they need. In a sense, for the viewers, it won’t matter where the content is coming from, they will get the same experience.

Of course, you don’t always know what you want to watch, that’s part of the appeal of the TV. Google TV has this covered too and will enable you to browse to find something that you like, again, be it online or on TV. And it doesn’t have to be just video content. With a full browser at your disposal, you could view a Flickr slideshow or even play a Flash game on your big-screen TV.

Details about Google TV have been trickling in for a couple of months now and most have been accurate. As far as hardware is concerned, Google TV will be available on TV sets, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes. What’s more, all of these will work with your existing cable or satellite box. This flexibility is possible because Google TV comes with just a few hardware requirements, Internet connectivity, both wired and wireless, HDMI connectivity and Bluetooth connectivity for input devices.

The platform will be powered by Intel chips, specifically Atom processors in combination with a dedicated GPU and specialized hardware for video and audio. This will ensure that Google TV devices will be able to run any kind of content you can throw at it, be it HD video or Flash games. The last part is possible because of the integrated Adobe Flash player.

Which brings us to the software components. Google TV runs Android. At the Google I/O keynote, the boxes were on Android 2.1, but this will change in the future, Google says. Of course, Android was designed as a mobile operating system, but its lightweight and tight integration with the hardware make it perfect for CE devices. Interestingly, though, there aren’t that many changes between the vanilla Android and the one running on these devices.

The second big software component is the browser. The interesting part here is that Google ditched the regular Android web browser and went with Google Chrome instead. The reason for this, the company says, is that Chrome is designed for a full web experience and better suited for the large screens. Of course, most people won’t even known they’re running Chrome, since it features a completely redesigned UI.

Google TV devices are expected to hit the shelves in autumn, in time for the big holiday-season sales. For now, you should expect devices from Sony, TV sets and Blu-ray players, and a box from Logitech. Google has also partnered with Dish Network to bring the platform to the satellite TV provider’s customers.

But this is only the beginning, Google plans to continue to develop the platform and eventually open it up to everyone. Right now, developers can start optimizing their sites for Google TV. In early 2011, Google will open up the Android Marketplace to Google TV so developers can start creating apps dedicated to the platform. And, finally, in summer 2011, Google says it will open-source everything, so anyone can use the platform on any device they want.

Microsoft Wins the Best Large Workplace in Europe 2010 Three Years in a Row

Microsoft has been deemed as the Best Large Workplace in Europe 2010 by the Great Place to Work Institute for the third year running. It is quite an honor for the Redmond company’s over the pond presence, especially considering the sheer size of the “competitors.” The Great Place to Work Institute conducted an evaluation survey of in excess of 1,300 companies in no less than 17 markets across Europe. The results of the 100 Best Workplaces in Europe report as well as the awards for companies were unveiled during a gala ceremony at the Great Place to Work European Conference 2010 in Madrid on May 20, 2010.

Jean-Philippe Courtois, president, Microsoft International, welcomed news of the award. “Investing in people and creating a work environment that utilizes the latest technology has enabled staff to transform the way they work and interact with colleagues, delivering a strong work-life balance and a highly motivated and empowered team. This past year has been challenging for businesses and employees in all industries, and Microsoft is no different. That said, we continue to be optimistic especially as our industry transitions toward what we believe is the next big era in technology – cloud computing," he stated.
It is because Microsoft’s extensive investments in people that the award was given. According to the Redmond company, the award is designed to celebrate exceptional working environments, but also practices, as well as the benefits and recognition that workers receive. Palle Ellemann Knudsen, managing director for Great Place to Work Institute Europe, underlined that one of the winning points with the software giant was the way it remained consistent in the values it offered as an employer.
